About Depth Mental & Myself

Hello there! My name is Melinda Redgrave, I’m 29 years old and I have been making photographs in the Chicagoland area since I was about 13 or 14. If I were to describe my work in the most succinct way, I would describe it as an effort to make love through an art form. At it’s core, when I make a photograph, I’m doing it because I love the art and in many cases, I love the subjects. Whether or not they are my friends, my family, clients or even bands that I have been blessed with the opportunity to photograph over the years. My efforts are to capture memories and moments, but most of all, to showcase my love through this medium. My work typically falls into the subjects of street, portrait and concert photography. That said, I have generally been open to experimenting with other styles to learn more.

When I started Depth Mental in 2011, initially it was supposed to be an art collective of many artists of different forms of media. However, that plan fell through and I was left alone with a name, a camera, and no idea what to do with myself; resulting in its most current form: Depth Mental Photography. Since then I have traveled a fair bit of distance to photograph many nouns (of the person and place variety) and capture the images of some of my most favorite bands within Rock and Heavy Metal. Such bands including but not limited to: Animals as Leaders, Nile, Devin Townsend Project, LITE, Truckfighters, Katatonia, and Alcest. What you see in this portfolio is essentially my style and the results of my keen eye, which I have gone through much to learn how to use. The end result is “Depth Mental”: Say it fast enough and you’re talking about my kinda music. Say it slowly and you’re talking about the way I approach the craft.

For those that have wandered here to my page, I thank you and I love you.

Sincerely,
Mel Redgrave (Photographer & Founder)
